I like this film. The film tells the story of a young woman who becomes one of the concubines of a wealthy man during the Warlord Era. It is noted for its opulent visuals and sumptuous use of colors. This film got a lot of award and Nominations in the world. Although the screenplay was approved by Chinese censors, the final version of the film was banned in theatres (although it has since been screened on commercial TV in China). Some film critics have interpreted the film as a veiled allegory against Chinese communist authoritarianism. As a Chinese, I know the true of the old China. Women are not individual, they are always depends on men. In Chinese old word for women “You have to depend on your father when you are young; you have to depend on your husband since you get marriage; you have to depend on your son after you are old.” Songlin is lucky, she has a chance to be a student, but also this is her bad luck. She has to marriage to an old rich man, Master Chen, after her father dead. Songlin has a chance to get education, but she doesn’t want to accept the life she has.
